The newly built Emil Schumacher Museum (ESMH) presents one of the internationally most influential representatives of abstract painting in an exhibition space totalling 1.200 square meters. The museum has a collection of 500 originals from all of Emil Schumacher’s creative periods. These are made available by the Schumacher Foundation and the City of Hagen. On three floors, his paintings, works on paper, ceramics and porcelain are shown in alternating exhibits. The ESMH understands itself as a center for the exploration of expressionist art after 1945. The museum’s exhibition program presents the artist Emil Schumacher in relation to parallel international developments in the arts and his chronological surroundings. Moreover, young artists whose works are close to Schumacher’s œuvre in form or content will be shown regularly.
