The principle neither to sketch anything beforehand nor to have a formal vision of the outcome has been interpreted early on (for example by Clement Greenberg) as symbolizing a new and infinite freedom, which counteracts the concept of art of totalitarian systems. Emil Schumacher’s work, in this sense, is „free“ painting, as well as „freeing“ painting, leaving room for interpretation to its spectators.
